Retail Therapy Treatment
By Purva Bhatia

Call it a shopaholic's dream come true but retail therapy just got doctor's approval! Shop, get a relaxing spa treatment and even catch up a movie – all in a hospital! The soon to be opened Fortis Hospital in Gurgaon will offer all this and more.

Equipped with all the facilities one usually finds in a mall, the hospital will offer various
facilties that patients and relatives can avail of, like swimming pool for hydrotherapy, a fully equipped gym and spa, and a mini theatre. For retail therapy there are outlets of brands like Organic Haus, Mamma Mia, and WH Smith along with a food court offering a host of dining options. What’s more, there will be a health club, steam sauna and a beauty salon as well. Patients can opt for art therapy too with art and health programmes.

But what is the objective of boasting all of these facilities in a hospital? "We don't just want to cure the patient but also heal them. The facility has been designed keeping in mind the anxiety and stress that patients and their families undergo and such an environment will offer ease and comfort," says Shivinder Singh, executive vice chairman, Fortis Healthcare.

But will the concept work? Researchers at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University might answer in the affirmative. The latest study done by them states that after a stressful experience that challenges one's self-image, one tends to increase overall consumption to distract and forget about the stress. So, retail therapy is actually a coping mechanism. It also says that people tend to shop when they know they are going to get into a stressful situation.

Retail therapy apart, the hospital claims to be the first in its category to house a full-fl edged stem-cell lab. As far as offering all facilities is concerned, skeptics might question the idea but shopaholics certainly won't complain!
