A teacher, a social worker, a mother of 10-year-old and Mrs India International 2011-12, Richa Sharma always wanted to do something meaningful in her life.
Born and brought up in Kanpur, she got married when she was just 19 and moved to Kolkata. Her instincts compelled her to sign up for JD Birla Institute for teaching and join an NGO to upgrade the lives of the needy.
Gorgeous yet down-to-earth, Sharma's life took a drastic change when she visited Mumbai with her family for Shirdi and landed in one of the leading malls where a photographer approached her for pictures. Later she got to know that it was for some contest happening in the mall and she had won it. "My pictures were printed on Archies Gallery cushions and my family members appreciated it a lot," says 31-year-old. The |

incident motivated her to invest in her talent; she soon started modelling for designers and leading brands. That further prompted her to enter the Mrs India International contest held at Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and rest is history.
Recently the diva walked the ramp for designer Debarun Mukherjee at Lakme India Fashion Week and was awarded the Kolkata Gaurav Sanman, a felicitation given to prominent city achievers.
Despite her busy modelling schedule, she takes out time for charity and social work. "I think every effort counts. Charity work keeps me very busy and I make sure daughter Aashna accompanies me, so she gets a firm grounding in selfless caring. Each and every single smile I get to see on the faces for the ill, the poor, and the suffering gives me soul satisfaction by not only helping them financially but spending time and listening to their stories and playing and dancing with them."
When asked about her future plans she says, "Today I am extremely content with what I am and what I have as a wife and mother. Of course, as time passes one tends to learn more and gain more from life. So in five years from now I hope I will be more responsible as a human being a better citizen, a wonderful mother and would be contributing something relevant to society in real life as well as in front of the camera. If given a chance I would like to break the barrier which is unseen and unspoken of, yet exists between the rich and the poor." Sharma feels her husband has been the most instrumental person in her success.
At present, she is also going through a few television serial scripts but none has touched her heart as yet. |
