FASHIONISTA JOURNEYS
December 19, 2021 COMMENT comment

FASHIONISTA JOURNEYS
By Priyanka Chakrabarti

Born in New Delhi, Ambika Anand, the gorgeous fashion journalist, was a style and fashion enthusiast even as a kid. Hailing from a styleconscious family background, fashion reporting seemed an appropriate career choice for her. She completed her schooling from Delhi Public School and graduated from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University. After then having earned a diploma degree in Economics from the Cardiff Business School, there was no looking back for this diva. Her popular shows on NDTV Good Times include Band Baaja Bride, The Big Fat Indian Wedding and I'm Too Sexy for My Shoes.

You are one of the best dressed women on Indian television. What's your style mantra?
Fashion is like an ever-embryonic study to me! The whole concept of design, art and fashion stimulates me intellectually. My style mantra is to be experimental and yet not lose out on the comfort quotient.

Tell us about your childhood and family.
I spent my childhood in Chandigarh where my dad was in the business of plastics and my mother was a lawyer. My friends and family were always very styleconscious and well-versed with the latest updates in the world of fashion. My mother knows a lot about Indian weaves and textiles; so I need to thank them all for my fashion awareness. I guess my upbringing has shaped my profession in the best way.

So did you always want to be a fashion journalist?
Well, I wanted to become a television journalist ever since I was 17. I am fascinated by people and events; NDTV Good Times provided me the most appropriate platform and opportunity. I absolutely love writing scripts and shooting; when you get it right, it's like attaining nirvana.

What’s your opinion on the current fashion journalism scenario of our country?
Well, I think it’s sprouting. But aspart of our tradition and culture, no one criticises a designer. However, there is always room for improvement. So I believe in a couple of years, fashion journalism will rise to higher notes.

Your show I'm Too Sexy... is now in its eighth season. How has the journey been?
The show has been amazing and the journey has been even better. The team tries new and exciting things every season, keeping fashion the core focus. The last five years have been really interesting with various international brands entering the Indian market and our very own Bollywood, the greatest mediator of fashion, evolved gradually in a higher pedestal of style and glamour. We were blessed to witness all that and more.

Which Indian city do you think has the best fashion sense?
Since Delhi witnesses the maximum seasons there are more reasons to dress up! The colourful trends surface beautifully season after season in the capital. It is mesmerising to be at the centre of all the progression and study it from close quarters.

What are the trends that you will focus on this season?
This season we will be primarily focusing on peplum, sari with dhoti pants by Anamika Khanna, jumpsuits and jumpsuit shararas, to name a few. We are trying to savour the flavours of handsomely blended Indo-Western attires.

Where do you shop from?
I have seen so many places; I have shopped from so many different countries but my most favourite destination is India. I think Indian designers rock.

“My friends and family were always very style-conscious and well-versed with the latest updates in the fashion world... so I think I need to thank them all for my fashion awareness.”
